Otaru
Romantic canal town of glassworks, music boxes, and sushi.
A 30-minute JR ride west of Sapporo, Otaru flourished as a herring-fishing and shipping hub in the early 1900s. Its gas-lit canal and stone warehouses now host glass workshops, sushi-ya, and the magical Snow Light Path festival each February.
