Autumn in Hokkaido

Japan's earliest koyo — red maples roll south from the mountains starting in September.

When to go
Mid September – Late October
Weather
5–18°C · crisp air, brilliant skies, chilly mornings

Hokkaido kicks off Japan's autumn season. While Kyoto's maples don't peak until late November, Daisetsuzan's alpine ridges blaze red in mid-September — making it possible to chase the same koyo wave for two full months across the country.

Chasing the koyo line

Start high and move south. Asahidake summit lights up first (mid Sept), then Sounkyo (late Sept), then central plains (early Oct), and finally the coast around Hakodate (late Oct). A one-week itinerary can chase three waves of color.

Food in season

Autumn is Hokkaido's harvest peak: salmon (akiaji) runs, hairy crab, new-rice sushi, freshly dug potatoes, and the year's first 'jagaimo butter'. Many ryokan switch to a kaiseki menu focused on mountain mushrooms and game.

Must-see highlights

  • Daisetsuzan & Asahidake Ropeway — Japan's first foliage, mid-September
  • Sounkyo Gorge — towering cliffs draped in red, prime late September to early October
  • Lake Onuma (Hakodate) — gentle paddle-boat views with Mt. Komagatake reflections
  • Jozankei Onsen — riverside maples viewed from the rotenburo (open-air bath)

Concierge tips

  1. Pack genuine warm layers — Asahidake summit can hit 0°C in late September.
  2. The Asahidake Ropeway gets long queues during koyo weekends. First gondola at 6:30am is the safest move.
  3. Driving the Sounkyo–Bihoro Pass loop rewards an early start with mist over the lakes.
