Spring in Hokkaido

The last cherry blossoms in Japan, blooming when the rest of the country has finished.

When to go
Late April – Late May
Weather
5–17°C · cool mornings, mild afternoons, occasional spring rain

Hokkaido's spring arrives a full month after Tokyo. By the time mainland Japan is green again, sakura are just opening across the south coast — making Hokkaido the perfect 'second chance' for cherry-blossom travelers.

Why travel in spring

Spring is Hokkaido's quietest premium season. Flights and ryokan rates drop sharply after the New Year peak, the snow has melted from the cities, and the air stays crisp enough for long walks. It's the best window for photographers who want sakura without the Kyoto crowds.

What to pack

Layered clothing: a light down or fleece for mornings, a wind-resistant jacket for the coast. Comfortable waterproof shoes — Hokkaido's spring brings sudden showers and the mountain roads can still hold patches of snow into early May.

Must-see highlights

  • Matsumae Park — over 10,000 cherry trees of 250 varieties, the northernmost castle hanami in Japan
  • Goryokaku Park (Hakodate) — the star-shaped fortress framed by 1,600 sakura
  • Moerenuma Park (Sapporo) — Isamu Noguchi's sculpture park with late-April blossoms
  • Biei & Furano — fresh greens, snow-capped Tokachi range, almost no crowds

Concierge tips

  1. Book Matsumae & Hakodate accommodation 3+ months ahead — Golden Week (late April – early May) is peak.
  2. Mountain passes such as Shiretoko Pass may still be closed until late April. Confirm road status before driving.
  3. Bring an empty stomach for spring uni (sea urchin) — the Rishiri/Rebun season starts in May.
