Sapporo Soup Curry
Invented in 1970s Sapporo, soup curry is a thin spiced broth (chicken, lamb, seafood or vegetable) served with whole roasted Hokkaido vegetables and a bowl of rice on the side. Lighter than Japanese curry rice, deeper than Thai soup.
Soup curry is Sapporo-born and has stayed almost exclusively in Hokkaido. Outside the prefecture, you'll rarely taste the original spice balance.
- · Classic chicken-leg soup curry with seasonal vegetables
- · Lamb keema soup curry
- · Seafood (shrimp/scallop) soup curry — spring and summer
- · Vegetable soup curry with Furano corn (summer only)
- · Suage — the most-recognised Sapporo brand, multiple branches
- · Garaku — Susukino flagship, queues from opening
- · Picante — Hokkaido University area, cult-favourite recipe
- · Soup Curry GARAKU and Suage at New Chitose Airport — last meal before flying
Choose spice level 3 (out of 10) on your first visit — Sapporo curry is hotter than mainland Japanese curry. Order rice 'small' (sho) if you want room to taste several bowls in one trip.
