About the region
The gateway hub. New Chitose access, world-class powder at Niseko, canal-lit Otaru, and volcanic onsen at Tōya and Noboribetsu — most first journeys begin here.
Central Hokkaido is where most journeys begin, and it rewards a slower pace. Base yourself in Sapporo for food and city life, add the canal town of Otaru, then head to the volcanic onsen towns around Noboribetsu and Lake Tōya or to the powder slopes of Niseko.

Frequently asked questions
Is a private car worth it for central Hokkaido?
Distances are short, but luggage, children, seniors and ski gear make door-to-door transfers far easier than trains or buses. Many guests combine an airport transfer with a one-day tour.
How long does it take from the airport to Niseko?
About 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and weather. Winter roads can be slower, so we plan extra time.
When is the best time to visit central Hokkaido?
It works year-round: December to March for snow and skiing, early May for cherry blossoms, summer for cool outdoor days and October for foliage.
