About this place

Rusutsu is a self-contained resort area in the hills west of Sapporo, roughly halfway between Lake Tōya and Niseko. It is known for deep winter snow and gentle, family-friendly terrain, and it makes an easy base for combining skiing with the onsen of Lake Tōya.

Leave room between ski days for a lakeside visit or a transfer to Niseko. In summer, the appeal shifts to open mountain scenery and unhurried drives.

What to do

  • Skiing and snowboarding

Make the most of the winter snow, with days planned around your group.

  • Family-friendly slopes

Gentler terrain is part of the appeal for a family ski stay.

  • Lake Tōya

Lakeside scenery and hot springs; approx. 30 min by road.

  • Niseko

Continue to another ski area; approx. 45–60 min by road.

  • Summer drives and mountain views

A slower-paced visit when the hills turn green.

Getting there

From New Chitose Airport, allow approx. 2 hrs by road; from Sapporo, approx. 1.5–2 hrs. Lake Tōya is approx. 30 min away and Niseko approx. 45–60 min. Private transfers and charters let you plan around your luggage and ski equipment.

All driving times are approximate and depend on the route, traffic and weather. Allow extra time in winter.

Best season

Dec–Mar is the main ski season. Summer brings green mountain scenery and resort activities; check your preferred plans for your travel dates rather than assuming everything operates year-round.
