5-Day Summer Furano & Biei Luxury Itinerary from Sapporo

Lavender at first light, patchwork hills, and a private English-speaking driver for every kilometre between them.

Hokkaido's summer is short, luminous and surprisingly precise: lavender peaks for barely three weeks, the patchwork hills of Biei change colour every ten days, and the light that makes those photographs possible lasts from about 5am until 8am. A self-drive holiday spends that light parking, queueing and re-routing. A private itinerary spends it standing in the field.

This five-day itinerary is fully custom: we build it around your arrival time at New Chitose Airport, the bloom report of that exact week, and the pace your family actually enjoys. Nothing is a fixed package — the route below is the shape most of our summer guests settle on.

Day by Day: New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Furano and Biei

Day 1 begins with a private transfer from New Chitose Airport (CTS) in a Toyota Alphard or Hiace Grand Cabin, with luggage handled for you and a first evening in Sapporo — a counter sushi dinner, or Jingisukan if the children are with you. Day 2 runs Sapporo to Furano by private car, stopping wherever the roadside actually deserves it, arriving in time for the late-afternoon lavender light at Farm Tomita.

Day 3 is the Biei day, and it starts early — the patchwork road, Shikisai-no-Oka, Shirogane Blue Pond before the coaches arrive, then a slow farm-to-table lunch. Day 4 is deliberately unplanned until the night before: a hot-air balloon at dawn, Tokachidake onsen, a cheese or wine workshop, or simply a second pass at whichever field you loved. Day 5 returns to Sapporo or CTS with margin built in, not hoped for.

  • Day 1 — New Chitose Airport private transfer, Sapporo check-in, evening dining reserved in advance.
  • Day 2 — Sapporo to Furano by private car, Farm Tomita in the late-afternoon light.
  • Day 3 — Biei patchwork road, Shikisai-no-Oka, Shirogane Blue Pond before the crowds.
  • Day 4 — Open day: dawn balloon, Tokachidake onsen, winery or cheese workshop.
  • Day 5 — Unhurried return to Sapporo or CTS, with buffer time built into the schedule.

Why a Private Driver Changes a Furano and Biei Summer

Summer traffic in central Hokkaido is not heavy, but it is concentrated: everyone reaches the same three car parks at the same hour. Your driver knows which lavender rows are open before 6am, which hill road gives you the Tokachi range without a tour coach in the frame, and when to leave Biei so that dinner in Furano is calm rather than rushed.

Practically, it also removes the parts nobody enjoys: no parking hunts with a toddler in 30-degree heat, no luggage juggling between three hotels, no one in your party missing the wine because they are driving. Your concierge pre-books farm restaurants, the balloon slot, and the ryokan with a private open-air bath, and the vehicle stays with you as a cool, shaded base all day.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best week to see lavender in Furano?

Peak bloom is usually mid-July, roughly the 10th to the 25th, but it shifts a week either way with the spring temperatures. Early July gives you early varieties and far fewer visitors; early August still offers beautiful mixed flower fields in Biei. We check the current farm reports before finalising your dates.

Can we stay in Furano and Biei rather than commuting from Sapporo?

Yes, and we recommend it. Sapporo to Furano is around two and a half hours each way, so staying two or three nights in the Furano and Biei area is what makes the dawn light possible. We arrange the accommodation, including ryokan with private open-air baths and small design hotels among the hills.
