Sapporo Day-Trip Ski Resorts
Not every ski holiday needs a move to a mountain resort. If you are staying in Sapporo for the city, food and shopping, several ski areas can be reached for a half day or a full day and you can be back for dinner. This page compares five of them by the things that matter on a short trip: how far they are, who they suit, whether lessons and rental are offered, and whether an onsen fits into the same day.
Moiwa on this page means Sapporo's Mt. Moiwa (Sapporo city) — not Niseko Moiwa, which is a separate ski area in the Niseko region.
Comparison at a glance
Drive times are approximate figures published by each resort, or marked “confirm” where the resort does not publish one. Winter roads, traffic and your exact hotel change them; we confirm timing when quoting.

Sapporo Teine
Sapporo Teine is split into two zones: the Olympia Zone lower down, and the Highland Zone around the summit of Mt. Teine. The resort publishes approx. 40 minutes from central Sapporo and approx. 60 minutes from New Chitose Airport by expressway. The Olympia Zone has wide beginner and intermediate runs and a kids’ cross course, which makes it the gentler half for families. For the 2026–27 season the resort lists Olympia Zone night skiing from 5 December 2026 to 28 March 2027, 16:00–20:00. Ski school and rental are both offered on site.
Sapporo Teine (official)Sapporo Mt. Moiwa Ski Resort
This is Sapporo's own Mt. Moiwa, inside Sapporo city, and not Niseko Moiwa. The resort describes itself as the place where many people first meet snow, and it runs SAJ-certified ski schools. It has two entrances, the North and South slopes, and last season ran a daily shuttle from Makomanai subway station during the season. Ski rental is at the North Lodge; the resort said it did not offer snowboard rental last season. In 2025–26 it advertised night skiing from 16:00 to 21:00; we will confirm the 2026–27 schedule before planning an evening.
Sapporo Moiwa Snow Square (official)Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort (Otaru)
The resort's official name is Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort (Asari Ski Resort), in the Asarigawa Onsen area of Otaru. Its ski school is certified by both SAJ and SIA and offers programmes from complete beginners to experts, with morning and afternoon sessions. Rental is offered on site. The resort's seasonal shuttle stops at hotels in the onsen area, which is what makes it the easiest place on this page to pair skiing with a hot spring. It also combines well with an Otaru evening. Ask us about drive time from your Sapporo hotel and current night-skiing hours.
Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort (official)Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort
Sapporo Kokusai is in Sapporo's Minami-ku, between Jozankei and Otaru. The resort publishes approx. 60 minutes from central Sapporo and approx. 100 minutes from New Chitose Airport, and it announced a planned opening of 20 November 2026 for the new season. It has a gondola, large-scale rental with advance web booking, and a ski school. Because Jozankei Onsen lies on the Sapporo side of the road, a soak on the way back is a natural fit for a full day. We have not confirmed night skiing here, so plan it as a daytime trip.
Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort (official)Sapporo Bankei Ski Area
Sapporo Bankei is in Sapporo's Chuo-ku, and the resort gives approx. 20 minutes (about 8.5 km) from Sapporo Station. That makes it the quickest option for a two-hour taste of skiing, or an evening session after a day in the city. In 2025–26 night skiing ran from 16:00 to 21:00 on the centre lift. Rental and a ski school, including junior programmes, are offered, and season passes for 2026–27 are already on sale. We confirm the opening date and evening hours for your date before booking.
Sapporo Bankei Ski Area (official)Half day or full day?
A half day suits the closest areas, first-timers and anyone who wants the afternoon for the city. Start after breakfast, take a two-hour lesson or a few easy runs, and be back at the hotel by mid-afternoon. A full day makes more sense for the larger mountains, for confident skiers, or when you want to add an onsen on the way home. If children are young, a shorter day with a long lunch is usually happier than a long day on the slopes.
Sample private-driver day from a Sapporo hotel
Morning: your driver meets you in the hotel lobby with room for skis or boards, boots and day bags. Drive to the ski area you chose, collect rental gear and join a morning lesson or warm up on the easiest runs.
Midday and afternoon: lunch at the base lodge, then more skiing, or a quieter break for anyone who has had enough. Agree a pickup time that leaves daylight and a buffer for winter roads.
Evening: return to the hotel to change, or stop at a hot-spring area first when the route allows, then dinner in the city. Evening night-skiing extensions are possible at some areas, but only after we confirm the schedule for your date.
Beginners, kids and non-skiing family members
For a first time on snow, choose an area with a ski school you can book in advance and wide, gentle runs near the base. Book lessons for children separately from adults where the school offers it, and check the school's age rules before you go. Family members who do not ski can stay warm in the base lodge, try a short walk if conditions allow, or return to the city with the driver and be collected later as part of a charter. Tell us who is skiing and who is not, and we will plan the day around both.
Ski gear and vehicle capacity
Seats and luggage space are not the same thing. Skis, snowboard bags, boot bags and child seats all take room, so tell us how many people are travelling and what you are bringing. We then confirm a suitable vehicle on request; we do not assume a size before we know your gear. Renting at the ski area is often the simplest choice for a single day.
Travelling with grandparents
For multi-generation families, our senior-friendly Alphard has a powered side-lift seat that makes getting in and out easier on snowy days. Grandparents can ride along, enjoy the view from the lodge and return when they are ready. Ask us whether it suits your group and date.
Senior-friendly AlphardQuestions before you book
Is Mt. Moiwa the same as Niseko Moiwa?
No. Sapporo's Mt. Moiwa is inside Sapporo city. Niseko Moiwa is a different ski area in the Niseko region, covered in our Niseko guide.
Can we ski for half a day and still sightsee?
Yes. The closest areas work well for a morning on snow and an afternoon in the city. Tell us your priorities and we will suggest a realistic order.
Do we need our own gear?
No. Each resort on this page offers rental, though what is available varies; Mt. Moiwa did not rent snowboards last season. If you bring gear, tell us so we can confirm the vehicle.
Can we add an onsen on the same day?
Asarigawa Onsen and the Jozankei side of Sapporo Kokusai pair most naturally with a hot spring. Allow extra time and tell us before the day.
What happens if the weather turns?
Lifts and roads can be affected by wind and snow. We check conditions with you on the morning and can shorten the day or switch to a closer area.
